How To Resin A Charcoal Drawing: A Step-by-Step Guide

Preserving and enhancing your charcoal drawings with resin can create a stunning, professional finish that protects your artwork while adding depth and shine. In this blog post, we’ll walk you through the process of applying resin to your charcoal masterpiece, transforming it into a durable and eye-catching piece.

Materials Needed:

  • Your completed charcoal drawing
  • Wood panel
  • Adhesive (spray adhesive, glue stick, or brush-on adhesive)
  • Clear spray sealant (UV-protected and safe for charcoal)
  • ArtResin or similar epoxy resin
  • Gloves
  • Flat-edged spreading tool
  • Artist’s torch
  • (Optional) Brayer

Step 1: Mount Your Drawing

Begin by mounting your completed charcoal drawing onto a wood panel. Ensure your drawing is sized to fit the panel perfectly. Apply your chosen adhesive evenly to the back of your artwork and carefully place it on the panel.

💡 TIP: For a flawless mount, gently smooth out any wrinkles or air pockets using your hands or a brayer. This crucial step ensures your artwork adheres securely and evenly to the panel.

Step 2: Seal the Artwork

Protect your charcoal drawing by applying a clear spray sealant. Choose a product that dries clear, offers UV protection, and is specifically safe for use on charcoal. Apply the sealant according to the manufacturer’s instructions and allow it to dry completely.

Step 3: Prepare the Resin

Don your gloves and measure out your ArtResin (or chosen epoxy resin) according to the product instructions. Precise measurement is key to achieving the perfect resin consistency.

💡 TIP: Unsure about how much resin you need? Use our handy Resin Calculator by entering the dimensions of your piece to get an accurate estimate.

Step 4: Apply the Resin

Pour the mixed resin into the center of your mounted and sealed artwork. Using a flat-edged spreading tool, carefully guide the resin outward, ensuring it covers the entire surface evenly.

Step 5: Remove Bubbles

Once you’ve spread the resin, use an Artist’s Torch to remove any air bubbles that may have formed. Move the torch quickly and evenly across the surface to pop the bubbles without overheating the resin.

Step 6: Allow to Cure

Cover your work to protect it from dust and let it cure in a clean, level area. After 24 hours, the resin should be dry to the touch. However, for full curing, allow 72 hours.

By following these steps, you can transform your charcoal drawing into a professional, resin-coated piece of art. The resin not only protects your work but also adds a glossy finish that enhances the depth and contrast of your charcoal strokes.
